Guidance explained

Explainer 1

NHS England’s ambient scribing guidance, and what it asks of a sexual health service

What the April 2025 guidance (updated 2026) covers; the information governance guidance and template DPIA of March 2026; the AVT Supplier Registry of January 2026 and what it does and does not do; the five things a service must have in place: a clinical safety officer, DCB0160 work, a DPIA, a check of the supplier’s DCB0129 case and device status, and patient notification at the start of the consultation. In sexual health, the patient notification step deserves its own design.

Is an AI scribe a medical device? The MHRA’s July 2026 answer

The intended-purpose test; the line the MHRA drew on 29 July 2026 between transcription, summarisation, drafting and code suggestion for review (not devices) and diagnosis, treatment recommendation, risk scoring or automated action (devices); what it means for a sexual health service choosing between tools, and why MediScribe AI keeps safeguarding decisions with the clinician.

Explainer 3

Patients are catching the errors. What that means for clinician review

Healthwatch England’s findings reported by the Guardian on 31 August 2026; the HSSIB investigation opened on 6 August 2026 and due to report in summer 2027; the national evaluation protocol published in October 2026 by Cambridge, UCL and the Nuffield Trust. Review is the product, and a review screen that shows the source for every line is the difference between a check and a formality.
